Carving Spoons

$160.00

Taught by Eric Goodson

Spoon carving has become somewhat of a craze, and for good reason; spoons are truly amazing pieces of functional sculpture.  This two-day course will introduce students to the world of Slöjd, or Swedish handcraft, teach them how to safely and efficiently use both slöjd and hook knives, and explore decorative traditions like chip carving and kolrosing.

Students who have taken the spreader and/or spatula class will find many new challenges in this course, as design considerations, changing grain direction and the hollowing process definitely bring new demands.  That said, there are no prerequisites for this class.

All students will be given two pre-axed spoon blanks.  Loaner tools will be available, though Slöjd knives (Mora 106 and 120) and hook knives (Mora 164) will also be for sale.  If you have your own tools, by all means bring them.

No experience necessary, and so long as you can easily open a jar of spaghetti sauce, you have sufficient hand strength.
